Rochelle Burns

Dr. Rochelle Burns (PhD 2001 in social history) was appointed a Judge of the Citizenship Court of Canada shortly after her graduation from Union Institute & University in 2001 with a PhD in social history. Prior to that, she had been a long time teacher dealing with innovative programming for preschoolers to seniors. In addition, in 1972 she began writing for newspapers, magazines, corporations, the Ontario Human Rights Commission, as well as educational journals. She has just finished her latest book, Sparkle Path: your purpose in life; your Must. She continues her column for a Toronto newspaper on Family Matters, as well as writing op-ed pieces and socially significant articles for publications. Her extensive volunteering includes her founding of Books Are Friends whereby over 5,000 books have gone out to youngsters in Toronto’s inner city, in Canada’s north where aboriginal youngsters live, and for two orphanages in India, so far. The youngsters receive ongoing books to have a library of their own in their home. For her scholarly and volunteering contributions, Rochelle was given the Woman of Excellence Award in 2003.  Dr. Burns is a member of the UI&U International Alumnae/i Association Board. She will be selling a small book she self published: Wisdom for 7 days…and the rest of your life.
